Common Garage Door Repairs and How to Troubleshoot Them

While garage doors are meant to last a long time, they will eventually fall in disrepair and most likely require the aid of a professional technician for your repairs. You might have experienced one of the most common failures:

Cocked Door

A door that does not close fully on one side or seems to stick on just one side may be suffering from frayed cables or worn pulleys. In other words, the mechanism that opens and closes the door is not fully operational on one side. A trained professional can key in on the problem and help you decide if a full replacement is necessary or just one or two key parts. In some or even most cases, a professional cleaning may resolve the problem at a minimal expense.

Jammed

A jammed door that will neither open nor close is likely caused by either a broken cable or a bent track. The garage door springs may also be nonoperational. Before you call a garage door repairman, make sure the garage door opener is not the problem. Try opening or closing manually or replace the opener battery first.

Loud Bang

If the door closes with a loud bang before it stops working, the door likely has broken springs. Garage door repair NJ professionals can replace the broken springs with in-stock parts. Have the technician check the rest of the door’s mechanics while he is there to ensure you do not incur a second service call fee unnecessarily.

Squeaking Doors

If opening and closing the doors is accompanied by squeaks and squeals, dry rollers, bearings or hinges may be causing the problem. The problem can easily be prevented by hiring a garage door technician to do annual maintenance on the door. Failure to keep parts lubricated according to the manufacturers recommendations can lead to unnecessary wear and the eventual more serious repair problems.

Door Opens but Does Not Close

A garage door that will open but may not close may be easily repaired by cleaning the photo eye located on the floor near the door. Debris in front of the eye can fool the mechanism into believing there are items under the door. If that is the case, the door will not close as a safety precaution. If a dirty eye is not the problem, call a professional garage door repair in your local area. The photo eye may be defective or misaligned.

2012 Interior Design Trends: The Return of Global Decor

It’s not unusual to see trends return in interior design. A few years ago, global decor was all of the rage but the following year, it was a tabu, dated style. For the coming 2012, global decor is making a come-back in the interior design world. Global influences on various home decor items is going to be extremely trendy this coming spring and summer, so be sure to put them on your wish list!

Bathroom Design Ideas

An unexpected room in your home to decorate using the global decor trend is your bathroom. A bathroom is a small room and with basic, versatile styled fixtures, you can regularly update the theme or decor style without having to remodel the entire bathroom.

Bathroom decorating ideas that incorporate global flavors could include items such as African tribal masks or African pottery. Wooden sculptures or handmade wall art are all great accessory options for this style of interior design.

Bedroom Decorating Ideas

When it comes to the bedroom, your options may be a bit more versatile. Consider items such as a large carved headboard, which can make a dramatic decorating statement in your bedroom. Look for styles that are Moroccan or Asian, which can be extremely unique and different from what you might see at your best friend’s house, your neighbor’s house or your in-laws’ house. Other global styles include Parisian, Aboriginal, Southwestern, Hispanic or Latin, Caribbean and many, many more.

Carved side tables and trendy lamps with woven shades are perfect for the global decor look. When it comes to global decor, don’t be afraid of metallic shades either: golds, brass, bronze and silvers are all completely acceptable when it comes to decorating with a global influence.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match cultures in your international decor. Just because you enjoy a set of tribal chairs from Africa doesn’t mean you can’t mix those chairs with a nice Moroccan style coffee table. When it comes to global decor, let the decorating ideas flow. Designers from major cities everywhere; including New York interior designers and Los Angeles interior designers, aren’t afraid to mix and match patterns, colors, styles and even cultures, so you shouldn’t be afraid of mixing and matching either!

Last but not least, another trend: reclaimed wood, has a place in the global design style. Reclaimed wood looks perfectly at-home when paired with other global elements, such as woven baskets, carved wooden statues or imported wall art.

Remodeling – Top 10 Reasons to Upgrade Your Home in a Recession

Almost everyone I know has seen their home values fall in the last two years, many in the double digit range. However, there is a silver lining to this economic downturn for some lucky homeowners. This is an ideal time to remodel your house. (If you’re at grave risk of losing immediate household income or if you have no equity whatsoever in your home, please read no further.)

If, however, you have been wanting to remodel for a while, plan on remaining in your home for the next 10 years or longer, or want to be a more competitive seller in this buyer’s market, now can be an excellent time to begin a remodeling project.

Here’s why:

1. The best builders, contractors and trades have much greater scheduling availability right now, which gives you access to professionals you might not otherwise be able to get. As the New York Times put it, during the boom years, “Good contractors were as hard to get as celebrated doctors.” Their knowledge and skill are unchanged. It’s just that many have more down time at the moment.

2. Given the laws of supply and demand, the drop-off in work has driven down prices on some goods and services. This gives you the upper hand in negotiation. Consider, though, that the best folks are still going to cost more in labor than the less skilled ones. However, they very well may save you money — and aggravation — in the long run, as you won’t have to hire someone else to fix amateur mistakes or a lawyer to bring them to heal.

3. Many of the weaker players are being weeded out by the economy before you ever meet them. The remaining pros are better project managers with stronger referrals. This will reduce your chances of running into the kind of con artist that’s drawn to a boom and moves on during a bust.

4. New rules make it easier for senior homeowners to finance their projects through reverse mortgages. Contact one in your area to see how this can bring you a new kitchen, bath, addition, etc.

5. There are excellent, new products on the market that will help you save money on water and energy. By building them into your remodeling project, they could help pay for themselves, and make your home more appealing to future buyers. According to a recent study by McGraw Hill quoted by the Wall Street Journal, “One-third of home buyers say they are willing to pay a premium of $20,000 or more for a green home.” (Helping the environment is a plus, too.)

6. On a related note, local laws in some areas and new federal incentives may offset costs for water- and energy-saving products you can incorporate into your remodel.

7. If someone in your home has respiratory issues like asthma, changing to more indoor-air-quality-oriented products can improve their comfort and well-being. There are terrific products on the market now to assist you – and them – in that regard.

8. If an aging relative moves in with you, or you’re looking at staying in your home into your senior years, upgrading your home with aging-in-place features can improve your safety and enhance both your home’s livability and resale value. (Less than 10 percent of American homes are built with aging in place features, while millions of Americans are getting ready to retire — you do the math!)

9. Unlike the house flippers we saw remodeling in recent years to keep up with the Joneses, those of you who have been in your home for a while really know its strengths and weaknesses. You also know what truly makes sense for your lifestyle. This will yield a more successful outcome on your project, more suited to how the home can best be improved for its residents and guests.

10. If you’re spending more time in the house these days, as many folks are, improving your home will provide some anti-recessionary joy. And who couldn’t use that taste of sunshine these days?

Contemporary Bedroom Furniture To Jazz Up Your Sleeping Quarters

If you’re getting a little fed up with your bedroom and you’re thinking of jazzing things up a bit, then a few key items of contemporary bedroom furniture could be just what you need. Contemporary furniture is a fantastic addition to your sleeping quarters, with an amazing range of modern contemporary beds, bedside tables and chests of drawers available to suit all different budgets.

Contemporary bedroom furniture is good for brightening up a room for many reasons – the very reasons that make it so different from more traditional styles of furniture. Firstly, there’s colour – contemporary bedroom furniture is all about high impact, statement colours. Bold and bright, contemporary furniture was a stark departure from the warmer, earthier tones of previous styles. There is a school of thought that this may be due to the belief, popular at the time, that colour had an effect on mood and reflected self-confidence. Whatever the reason, it means that contemporary beds or a bright chest of drawers will pep up your bedroom and bring a little light into your life.

Before the contemporary movement, furniture had been crafted almost exclusively out of wood and iron. This presented certain limitations within its application and made for centuries worth of design that tended heavily towards huge, chunky items with decorative, fussy carvings that would dominate a room more for its size than its design. These items were imposing and ostentatious, whereas due to the use of a variety of new materials, contemporary beds and other pieces were able to take a sleeker, simple, and less cluttered look.

Designers started to experiment with more malleable materials, and combined technology and art to create more impressive and unusual forms. Steel (especially stainless), plastics, plywood and glass allowed the pioneers of contemporary furniture to play around with form; creating curves, geometrical shapes and everything in-between.

All of these stylistic elements of contemporary bedroom furniture make it the perfect choice for injecting some dynamism into your room. By breaking away from the tradition and choosing a contemporary bed, adding striking bedside tables and an eye-catching chest of drawers, the whole space will look and feel fresh, funky and fantastic. You can also choose some modern lighting and contemporary mirrors and position them so that the light bounces around the room, making it feel more spacious and offering the perfect ‘gallery’ feel to show off your contemporary bedroom furniture to its absolute best.

Interior Design to Work With Your Italian Furniture

Italian furniture collections are elegant and stylish. The only way you can do justice to them, is have interior design that suits them perfectly. By having everything in the right colors, sizes and the best textures, you will have a home that is attractive, elegant and full of style.

Most Italian furniture manufacturers also have architects who help with interior designing. This kind of service will help in guiding you on how to exploit your space, thereby maximizing on the personalization. The help can be for homes, offices, cinemas, hotel rooms, conference rooms and restaurants, getting the very best out of them by making them unique. You will at the end have your space furnished with style and personality.

Interior design also calls for the right selection of materials and fabrics to work with your furniture. When selecting the furniture, you can have the professionals come over to see the interior design of your home, to help in making the best selections. In case nothing matches what you have in the interiors, you can have something customized or simply have the interior decor altered to match well with the kind of furniture you are planning to make.

The interior design should be prioritized, especially when you consider to give your space a whole new look, thereby triggering the right mood and feel while in it. The professionals know how to choose the right colors, thereby making it work for your space in the best possible manner. The same thought applies in the selection of the best lighting appliances, to give the desired light effect to the space. It is important to note that different settings call for different kinds of lighting, hence the need to select the most ideal.

When looking for interior-design professionals, always make a point of settling for those with experience in the field. This is the only way you will manage to have justice done to your space. The company you settle for should also have a good reputation and be reliable in delivering the desired work, within the stipulated time slot.

You should feel comfortable enough when working with the interior designer, and he or she should make your needs the center of interest. Always avoid interior designers who do not give an ear to your desires, before giving you an advice on how to go about the whole process, for getting the best results.

Car Design: Exterior, Interior, And Color and Trim

Before being introduced on the market, a car undergoes a long and careful design process to make sure that it possesses all desirable qualities conformed to different aspects such as modernity, ergonomics, functionalities, and other prominent features. These aspects are polished and perfected by a group of design professionals who have strong background in industrial or transportation design.

The designing process is divided into three divisions. This entails the need for three types of designers comprising the team: an exterior designer, an interior designer, and a color and trim designer. Some car design teams include a graphic design professional, yet this person’s skill can just be shared among the team members as all may have automotive skill.

Cars are highly marketable products because of fast growing transportation demands. Car manufacture and dealership industries create enormous profits in introducing and dealing well-modeled cars on the market. Car companies like Dodge spend years of designing just to come up with a perfect car model that can boom for the long term.

Exterior designers of these car companies are responsible for developing the proportions, shapes and surfaces of the car through digital or manual drawing. The finished design undergoes a series of approval before finally being formed using an industrial plasticine with the actual size. The exterior aspect of the car is highlighted for its market with the help of some Dodge dealerships in Edmonton.

On the other hand, interior design focuses on the inner parts of the car including its pillar trims, instrument and door trim panels, head liner, seats, and others. Here is where most of the ergonomics is applied. Ergonomics is important in preventing discomfort, such as repetitive strains and injuries, from being experienced by passengers. This is among the many features that any Dodge dealerships in Edmonton can use in their promotion.

Finally, after exterior and interior designs have been made, the color and trim stylists will begin researching for the best colors and materials to be used for the manufacture. They typically base their design on the desire to provide unique interior environment experience for the passengers of the car. Part of the promotion, a car’s color and trim design is regarded by Dodge dealerships in Edmonton as the overall marketable quality of the car, whereas it is usually inspired from industrial design and fashion.

Remodeling – Cost Vs Return

I have found that the majority of home owners assume that for every dollar they invest in their home, they will get more than a dollar in return. Don’t shoot the messenger…….but it is not true.

According to the National Association of Realtors web site, the following is the average return on investment for the most common remodeling projects:

Deck addition — 76.8%

Major kitchen remodel — 80.4%

Bathroom remodel — 84.9%

New roof — 73.9%

Family room addition — 71.5%

Master suite addition — 72.6%

REMODELING FOR RESALE:

To obtain a high rate of return on your remodeling project should not be the goal. Making your home more marketable in order to obtain a sale should be the goal of your remodeling project.

Buyers typically are not going to pay much over market value in a given neighborhood. In contrast, buyers would rather spend the extra money for a nice home than pay below market value for a home they will have to fix up(unless they are specifically looking for a “fixer upper”). This means you will want your home to have similar features with similar quality as the homes your are competing against.

If you do remodel, make sure you do enough, but don’t go overboard. For example, if the homes you are competing with have oak cabinets and tile floors in the kitchen, then it wouldn’t be smart to install painted pine cabinets and linoleum in your kitchen. You will not be competitive. Buyers shop in a certain price range and they expect to get certain amenities that are appropriate for that price range. Nor would it be smart to install Brazilian hard wood cabinets and natural stone floors. The chances that you will recoup even the national average of 80.4% of your remodeling investment are not good. This is due to the fact that you will have to list your home above neighborhood market value. And as stated, buyers typically do not like to pay much over market value.

WHAT ARE THE BEST REMODELING PROJECTS?

As the statistics above indicate, kitchen and baths have the greatest return on investment. That is because just about anybody can paint a room or throw up some drapes or order some carpet once they purchase a new home. But remodeling a kitchen or bathroom is a different animal. Both the kitchen and bathroom require skill and know how to properly remodel them and most consumers know it.

The easiest projects that can make a big difference are painting, landscaping and cleaning. A clean yard, mulch and some flowers will enhance the curb appeal. Paint helps to make interiors and exteriors look new. Clean the carpets as well. Having things crisp and clean will immediately catch the eye of a potential buyer.

Before remodeling for the purpose of increasing the marketability of your home, consult with two or three realtors that do business in your neighborhood. A good realtor is invaluable when deciding how much you should do to get your house ready for sale. They can save you thousands of dollars and help you increase your profit margin.

Good luck!

Getting modernized appliances like dishwashers, sinks, garbage disposals, and ovens can add a lot of convenience to the cooking and cleaning aspects of life. Consider remodeled kitchens another instant way to improve the value of your home too.

3. Home or just regular room additions are an awesome way to change the dynamics of a homes overall feel and look. Adding space to a bedroom can make a room for a larger closet and make it feel much more comfortable and warming. How about a sun room or a deck area? Grilling during the warm seasons is a great American past time and what better way to enjoy it with all the amenities a newly designed and completed deck can bring!

If you are wanting one of these jobs completed get in touch with a local remodeling company in your area.

Remodeling – Removing Walls is Easier Than You Think

Before you start, make sure you understand all of the wall’s functions and know how well they can be served when it’s gone. Check to be certain that the space the wall divides will not seem ill-proportioned without it. Note that besides serving as a partition a wall may carry pipes, wires or heat ducts. Keep in mind that although removing a wall may join two spaces together it does not actually add any more space than the few square feet in which the wall stands.

To size up the job, look the wall over. The number of outlets and switches will suggest how much wiring lies inside it. A bathroom directly above may be hooked to plumbing that goes down through the wall. From the basement you may be able to detect whether heating pipes or conductors rise within the wall.

If all you find is wiring that terminates at outlets in the wall, you can remove it when you break the wall. A hot-air duct connected to a wall register can be cut back to the floor and capped with a grid. Even if you encounter many pipes and cables, you may be able to remove the bulk of the partition and leave part of one end of the wall to carry the various conductors, which can be moved there by a plumber or an electrician.

More critically, you should be aware that the wall may bear weight from above, thus serving as a vital structural element of the house. If it does, you will have to limit the width of the opening to 14 feet, because a bigger span entails too many risks and difficulties. To replace the weight-carrying function of the wall, you will have to install a visible overhead beam, as well as end posts for this beam that may also be visible, so that instead of removing the wall without a trace you make an arch. These intrusions can be minimized by surfacing the structural members with wallboard to match the walls, or by positioning furniture, such as bookcases, to hide the posts.

The key clue to a load-bearing wall is joists crossing its top plates perpendicular to them. You may be able to see the direction of the joists from your attic; you may have to cut a peephole in the ceiling next to the wall to be removed. The basement can also yield clues. If you find a girder or a wall running under and parallel to the partition in question, you can be quite sure that the partition carries weight down to this support. If any doubt remains, assume that the wall bears weight.

As the converse of a load-bearing wall, a nonbearing wall usually runs parallel to the joists and perpendicular to the long walls of the house. Walls enclosing small spaces like closets are probably non-bearing walls – but be sure to check. Because nonbearing walls serve no structural function, they can be removed without leaving an arch.
